What is a QR code?
That is a question that I obtained the answer to today while researching some information received in an email about using QR codes as part of my marketing strategy.
I have seen the QR codes around on many types of off line ads and knew that they obtained encoded information about products for sale. I was simply unfamiliar with exactly what a QR code was.
To find the answer to this question about QR codes, I did a Google search and was able to find a lot of information about these funny looking squares.
You may have seen these coded squares around in magazines, on street signs and billboards, in various advertisements, on entertainment tickets, on postal labels, on the side of buildings, and in many other places. You may even know their purpose. You may have used one.
Let’s Get the Nitty Gritty About QR Codes
QR is short for quick response. A picture of the QR code can be taken on a smart phone. Once the picture is taken, several things could happen. But normally, you are taken to an ad or website for a particular product or service.
In my quest I wanted to know what equipment a person needs to have to make use of a QR code?
I found that the user must have a smart phone, internet connectivity on the phone, and a QR code reader application on the smart phone.
I now truly understand enough about these quick response codes to see that they could be very useful in advertising today.
For example, it is easy to see that if someone can simply take a picture of the encoded square box with their smart phone, then they do not need to remember a website url, an email address or phone number to access the information they need.
A quick response code can be considered useful in advertising but what makes it so powerful?
With over 5.6 billion or 76% of the population of the world owning cell phones and with over half a billion or five hundred million people having access to mobile internet service, there is a tremendous number of people who could see a QR code, take a picture of the code and purchase a product.
While most people may not understand all the techy stuff involved with these codes, scanning of QR codes has increased by 4394 percent from 2010 to 2012. And of those people scanning QR codes 36 percent have annual incomes of over one hundred thousand dollars.
What a market that gives sellers!
I also found that 0ver 50% of people who scan the codes are between the ages of 18 and 34 years.
Also, most people expect to find a deal when they see these codes. This means that they are already looking to buy something and willing to spend money. Now I am really understanding a lot about the importance of QR code technology within our economy.
